Personal:

Married to Elizabeth (she got me running in 2003). We have three boys, Lucas (12) , Sam (8) and Ollie (5).

Many years ago, I read that the AVERAGE male is capable of a 2:40 marathon.  I decided to test that theory.  I began running in 2003 with Top of Utah as my first marathon (4:24).  I need 3 more minutes.

Well, I have been a total slacker about posting.  I did not run 120 miles today, but that is the total for the missed days (I won't bore you with the details).  The last couple of weeks I have run in Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina (where I jumped over a slow moving snake)!  Today,  I ran at Highland high school today and did 7 x 800.

I had to come and see who had run 120 miles in a day! Crud, that scared me for a minute!!! Glad to know you are human and just blogging for the month!

Since I was here, I read all of you info. You are an incredible runner! I have two questions for you: What did you think of the Pocatello Marathon? That is one I want to try. AND which half are you going to try to hit 1:15 at???

Oh, I have a third question: Do you still think the average male is capable of hitting a 2:40 marathon several years later?

LOL! I've never understood the Ultra thing, but maybe someday!

The Pokey marathon is great. They have a ton of free events at the finish to keep the family entertained. The race is small, so no potty lines and everything runs on-time. I highly recommend it, but it is hard to follow-up with St. George.

I'm still a couple years away from the 1:15 half, but Provo and TOU are good, fast courses to run it on.

I think most marathon runners peak in their 40's, so masters htting sub 2:40 are plentiful (it doesn't take a lot of young speed to run a 2:40 marathon). I hope to get a little closer at St. George this year.

331 miles last month! You are a running machine!

I am working towards an Ultra, so high miles, YES, but most of them slow!

What about the SLCity half? I think that is a fast course and it is one of my favorites. Provo is fast as well, but the ending is YUCK! Plus, it is just so poorly organized and crowded at the beginning. I guess if you start at the very front it would be better! I ran TOU Half last year and hated it, but I was coming off an injury and slow. I am going to give it another try this year, we will see.

My husband will be so sad to hear the marathon stuff. He has only been doing marathons for 3 years and he did finally hit a 3:15 even last year in St George so we took advantage of it and ran Boston. BUT he struggles with cramping (they say he sweats to efficiently) and just can not get his body to cooperate. I guess he is not the average male!! He had high hopes of breaking 3 hours, and he totally could do it if he did not cramp up, but I think he has given up after so many delirious trips to the medical tent!

Seems like most people really enjoy the SLC Half, but I'm no fan of Devine Racing due to their bankruptcy issues. For Provo, you kind of expect those things from Kurt (race director), so the key is not to expect much (lol)...but the pancakes are great!

I too have similar cramping issues. It helps if you do a lot of downhill training and run 6 days a week. Also, pray for overcast conditions. I'm sure he's got sub 3:00 in him, because if I can do it, anyone can.

Good luck on the Ultra.

Yeah, I wondered about the bankruptcy stuff when I ran it last year (that and my husband is a cop and has heard how they do not pay the cities and cops for years).

I am okay with the disorganization of Provo for the most part, is what everyone has come to expect. I also love the pancakes and fruit and smoothies at the end, I just hate the last 2 miles of the course. I did not run it last year and someone said they changed the course at the end, maybe I would like it now.

You are a wee bit faster than my husband, I can see that. But I do think he could do it if he could work out the cramping!!! Boston was perfect this year weather wise, yet he cramped up the earliest he ever has (mile 7). It was a bummer!

I could talk your ear off, so I will STOP now! best of luck to you with all of your goals. I can not wait to see a 2:40!!! Is this your first St George (if so, maybe you will get it! It is THE BEST course.)
